Signal to the Ocean Estate - Tunes for the Bird of Chittenden

The singer/guitarist of the Pittsburgh band Signal to the Ocean Estate, Caleb (full disclosure: a friend/former co-worker of mine) asked me to do a review of his band’s first full-length, Tunes for the Bird of Chittenden, and I gladly obliged. I’d heard a few of their songs before on their Myspace, but I’d honestly never bothered to explore further for reasons that need no explanation. That’s a shame – this band has the skill, influences, and overall sound to appeal to a HUGE audience. They’ve got Neutral Milk Hotel and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy on the alt-folk end, straight up rawk hooks and attitude, The Shins’ pop sensibility, and an overarching Tom Waits kind of Americana grit (but with way fewer years and cigarettes on Caleb’s vox). This really isn’t a band to be taken as derivative, though – as with any true artistic endeavor, its whole is more than the sum of its parts, and if you don’t believe me (i.e. you’re sick of hearing all the new folk rock popping up recently), try on “Safety” for size. Not enough? How about “No Place I’d Rather Be”? It’s classy, catchy, road-worn, pretty music, and you can tell they’re having fun. Remember, too, that this is a debut, and as such is an impressively solid base. I’d scope this band if I were y’all. They’ve got a spark.

Personally, it exceeded my preconceived notions by a mile; see, I expected it to be something I’d enjoy. I didn’t expect it to give me goosebumps at all the right moments. Good job.

The Sleepy Jackson - Personality

For those of you who were lucky enough to hear Empire of the Sun when I posted them almost a year ago, you will appreciate this album. Luke Steele is the front man of this group, who you will recognize simply by his distinctive voice. I haven't listened to this album as much as I should have because it is a masterpiece on its own. If you enjoy Empire of the Sun, you will enjoy the relaxing tunes of The Sleepy Jackson, especially during the holidays. For those of you who have no idea who Empire of the Sun is, I recommend that you get your hands on the album before they get played out. Enjoy!

Download in comments as always.

Interpol - Our Love To Admire

This is a request post.

Interpol’s sound is characterized by a dark mix of bass throb and choppy, sparse guitar. They have been compared to Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Chameleons for their similarly stark, sombre sound and obtuse, abstract lyrics.

Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope

Not a new artist to the scene, but always a longtime favorite. I've always been a fan of Regina Spektor and entirely fell away from listening to her a while ago and sadly did not come back. Today I vow to listen to more Regina Spektor and in doing so I downloaded 3 more of her albums. This is probably her best album and it was the one that started me liking her. Regina likes to play enthusiastically on her piano and sing amazingly to pretty much facinate any eager music listener. She also likes to use unorthadox noises with her mouth and hit things with sticks making simple but interesting beats citing influences from a wide assortment of genres. If you haven't listened to this album, get it immedietly. If you have listened to Regina, get this album if you don't have it. If you have this album, you get a gold star for the day.

Tally Hall - Pingry EP

This is a very rare album from one of my favorites that was specially recorded for a show that the band played at The Pingry School in Martinsville, New Jersey on May 13, 2005. The band made the long trip from Michigan to New Jersey because member Andrew Horowitz is a Pingry alumnus.

I ran Cross Country against Pingry for 2 years before they were "Too good" for our conference. I have a grudge against the school, but Tally Hall is one of my favorites and they do an excellent cover of "Just a Friend" which to be honest is not as well recorded as some live videos I saw, but nonetheless makes a great mostly live album.

If you like this, listen to Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum. Search it on the blog search mechanism thingy. It's somewhere.

Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag Nag (Single)

This is the single "Nag Nag Nag Nag" which has the song "I Found This Song In The Road" on the B-side. This is probably the only single that I own, I am not a very large fan of singles. Along with these 2 tracks, it has live tracks for other songs. Overall, I love this single and not only because we named the blog after it. Ok, that's a large plus, but give it a listen!

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock and Roll

Art Brut, what can I say about them? I owe the name of this blog to them, they kick ass, and are from London. I'm going to admit that I didn't know about them before I became a contributor to the blog, but Emperor Norton chose it, not me. After looking them up in curiosity, I fell in love with the song Emily Kane. It's impossible to not enjoy Art Brut, well it might be. The lead singer's British accent is really neat, I love British singers.

As Tall as Lions - As Tall as Lions

Back to indie we go! As Tall as Lions is a great indie rock/alternative rock band that will just kind of make you feel good and relaxed. Not in an upbeat way, but in a sort of an ambient way. This is their 2006 album which is by far the best. Well, I like it the best, you never know.

The Moldy Peaches - The Moldy Peaches

Yeah, I'll admit that this duo would never be famous if it wasn't for Juno, but that doesn't make them bad. The Moldy Peaches, consisting of Kimya Dawson and Adam Green are pretty lo-fi, but are such a good duo. What can I say? I'm a sucker for male/female voice clashing. Anyone Else But You is the cutest song ever and is really easy to play on guitar. Go ahead, impress your crush by playing "That song from Juno". Oh wow, I love and hate that movie.

The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army

What can I say? I'm humming along with these infectious indie-pop jams as I type this. It's like Tilly and The Wall with two dozen(Yes two dozen) members all dressed in brightly colored flowing robes and then throw in some gospel influence. This music is so uplifting, you'll be really happy after you listen to this album.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

I promised IETF I wouldn't post anything under the genres folk or punk so I've contributed a day's postings to things that he won't hate(Or hopefully likes). Ok, so Arcade Fire is a band that is produced by the great country of Canada(Hear me out here!). They play what has been called orchestral rock including guitar, drums, and bass guitar, the band's members also play instruments such as the piano, violin, and viola. The band members are unimportant because they have Owen Pallett the one man band from Final Fantasy who is enough said there. I think you'll like these guys a lot if you haven't heard of them already.

Mercury Rev - Snowflake Midnight

Mercury Rev has been floating around since 1984 yet obviously hasn't broke into the mainstream music. I suppose that's better for us then. What you're getting is a mellow chill out music for those cold nights. Chaotic instrumental bridges and the power of Orchestral influences pour from the seems of these songs. I guess the best way to describe these guys is "dream pop" as much as I hate to use that tag. As mentioned, the band has been playing together for nearly 25 years now, and each of them has mastered a piece of musical genius. So sit back, grab a nice fancy coffee, and relax to the therapeutic sounds of Mercury Rev.

Thriving Ivory - Thriving Ivory

Here's something from my home state of California for you faithful bloggers. Although I will admit this genre is a little outside the norm of our indie-rock/underground rap/folk rock/punk rock/etc posts, it is definitely worthy of a mention. I am really sticking my e-rep out on this one but even if a few people enjoy it, I've done my job. What you get to look forward to with this band is Adult Contemporary piano rock meets Smashing Pumpkin's Billy Corgan. I'm just going to say it, don't knock it till you try it.

Songs worth a Listen: Angels on the Moon, Hey Lady, and Overrated.

The Refreshments - Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy

I learned about this band when my English teacher played the song "Banditos" in class for a class project. I spoke with her about it after class and she told me the name of the band, and the name of the specific album it was on. She said that if I enjoyed punk rock at all then I'd like this album.

She was fucking right. This album is a beautiful piece of late 1990's rock, with awesome guitars, beautiful lyrics, and stories that make you think. Some specific songs I recommend on it are "Down Together","Mekong", and "Banditos".

Department of Eagles - In Ear Park

The Department of Eagles formed pretty much by accident in the dorm room of two students attending New York University. The cryptic duo have been making music together for 7 years now and the music shows how far they've come. To be quite honest, this isn't my favorite kind of music, but I can definitely appreciate it for what it is.

Songs worth a Listen: Teenagers, No One Does it Like You, and In Ear Park.

Note from IETF:

Margot & The Nuclear So and So's - The Dust of Retreat

Indianapolis ensemble Margot & The Nuclear So and So's have generated a great deal of buzz since the 2006 release of their debut album The Dust of Retreat. Despite having only one LP under their belt, they play sold-out shows nationwide and have joined the Epic record label. This is all with good reason - Dust is a flurry of relentlessly infectious pop songs with surprising depth. Their sophomore effort Animal! is expected later this year.

Gomez - Bring It On

Gomez are a british indie band that fuse blues and rock to create a sound not quite like anything else. Tom Gray's vocals wouldn't sound out of place in a smokey 1950's bar, particularly on tracks like "Tijuana Lady" and "Get Myself Arrested".
Bring It On is the bands first album and was so well received it coined the phrase to "do a Gomez" was coined it means to release a debut album so successful and to such unanimous praise that expectations are raised to the point where it is impossible to follow it.

John Butler Trio - Grand National

The John Butler Trio have made quite the name for themselves since their first chart release, Sunrise Over Sea. The follow up album, although very similar, still has as many awesome songs as before, with the hits Funky Tonight and Better Than, though my favorite is Used to get High. It's a nice album, but they just can't top their catchy tune Zebra.
