Streetlight Manifesto - 99 Songs of Revolution Volume 1

Streetlight's album leaked and will be released tomorrow for real. This is volume 1 of 8 that will be released consisting of 99 cover songs. I normally hate ska, cover songs, and especially Streetlight Manifesto, but I'm really enjoying this whole thing. Good song selection and good covers.

Compilation - California Ska quake 2: The Aftershock

I picked this up at the dollar store admittedly, but it is definitely the best thing in that entire store(and I've gotten some pretty cool stuff at dollar stores). If you like ska, this compilation has plenty of snazzy mid-90s artists of the California ska scene that you probably never heard of. A few that you have heard of, though, are Save Ferris, The Aquabats, Skadaddyz, and The Hippos. Lesson learned, take a good look at dollar store CDs because they are not all trash.

Bomb the Music Industry! - Discography

Bomb the Music Industry! is a side project of Jeff Rosenstock of The Arrogant Sons Of Bitches but the two bands share members frequently. They are known for their DYI Punk ethic doing everything themselves and getting fans and friends involved in shows. They also distribute all of their music for free which is awesome aside from being a kickass band. Rosenstock uses in a lot of his songs nothing more than a powerbook and a microphone but still maintains his folk-punkyness.

Enjoy their music for free, it's a personal favorite(Click the side albums for download) Get the entire album or just individual songs.

The Aquabats - Charge!!

The Aquabats are quite possibly the absolute best superhero/pop band you'll ever meet. Their roots start with a poppy-ska, and after misplacing their horn section settled on a keyboard. Their roots even contain Travis Barker, who drummed for their 1996 album The Fury of the Aquabats! (pre Blink-182).

Charge!! is their latest album. It's full of super-poppy anthems and an overall fun feel. Songs like Nerd Alert! and Look at Me (I'm a Winner) poke fun at the idea of what "cool" is in a hoky yet lovable sort of way. The Aquabats embrace the idea of individuality...through uniforms. Their shows resemble a Saturday morning cartoon show, with an enemy and cereal commercials to match.

Overall, The Aquabats are an adorable sort of band you can love. Or at least I do.

Bedouin Soundclash- Sounding a Mosaic

Bedouin Soundclash write simplistic, stripped down reggae with emotional clout usually not seen within the genre. Relying little on Jah Rastafari preaching, Bedouin Soundclash's subjects dwell on personal experience and dire social situations. Their song structures are quiet, but with a perceptible sense of urgency. They rely on standard reggae instrumentation of tinny rhythm guitar and thudding background bass coupled with complex drum patterns. They are also not afraid of strong vocal harmonization. The Soundclash's reggae is not a throwback to "Scratch" Perry greats like Jimmy Cliff, instead adding a modern feel to the music. "Sounding a Mosaic" is the Canadian band's debut for Sideonedummy records and was released in 2004.
