Riz, Dem Southernfolkz, and Wordsmith - Promo Tracks

Here are some hip-hop artists that I'm promoting that I think you guys will like. I don't promote anything that I don't think will actually take off, I have some serious hopes about these guys.

Riz is definitely like Akon or something or a mix between that and Flo Rida. He's got some really radio-ready tunes that are set to be the next party songs of 2010. Them Southerfolkz are kind of smoother and more hip-hop than rap and really surprised me. Wordsmith has some great beats and has a strong rap flow that is impressive, I really like Wordsmith.

Chiddy Bang- Unreleased

Chiddy Bang is pretty much amazing. This is band from Philly fuses electronica with some damn good hip-hop. I'm not saying that's something new, but I'm telling you it sounds fresh for sure. My friend played Chiddy Bang's song that has some sampled MGMT, and within seconds I was hooked. These songs also feature samples from Tom Waits, Kid CuDi, and Passion Pit. Lastly, these songs are all free to download, so you don't have to worry about deleting these and buying the songs if you like 'em. Since you all do that.

Tobacco - Fucked Up Friends

Yes, it is possible to make to make Black Moth Super Rainbow more awesome than it already is. That is to let Tom Fec(Tobacco) to do a solo album. He keeps the same Black Moth Super Rainbow sound and molds it into his own style which is more of a hip-hop blend of some sort. Aesop Rock is even featured on the track "Dirt". There are vocals which is also a plus on top of Black Moth. Indieducky placed this album on their "Best of 2008" list for a reason. Well, 2008 did suck for music, but you know what I mean.

Flobots - Fight With Tools

Usually I avoid rap like pin-less hand grenades, but the alternative hip-hop band "Flobots" have put a wonderfully close-to-home twist on their music with unconventional brass and string instruments composed perfectly to compliment the other aspects of the music, not sounding the least bit out of place. I can listen to the same song three or four times over focusing on different parts of the music, and it never seems to get old. I didn't expect it, but the album flowed together extremely well. There weren't weak points of the album that bored me and made me skip ahead, which have put a big dent in other albums all too often. It all fit together, and whether you appreciate it or not the message the album gave was presented extremely well.

I could be called a little biased as I'm a pretty big sucker for the viola, but I would say that you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of this album, whether you are a fan of rap or not. Put plainly, the composure is brilliant and the lyrics are fun to listen to and think about. The album ended with me still wanting more flobots.

MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday

DOOM is like beer. first time you try it... it's awful, though if you stick with, good times can certainly be had. i classed this guy as unlistenable after hearing the track 'Doomsday' from this album like 4-5 years ago but didn't delete it off of my mp3, Playa (what what) for some reason. i gave it a few more spins and once his whole drunken slurring style sunk in i was totally hooked on the guy. This album is chock full of amazing samples, namely from old Fantastic Four cartoons and even a beat made entirely of Scooby Doo sounds ('Hey!') but as the legend goes, DOOM didn't clear any of them, and the album was recalled and cancelled* by Fondle 'Em... though i'm one of the lucky few to own an original copy. And you're fucking nuts if you think i'm uploading that... i've literally played it once.

Drowning Dog - Got No Time

Drowning Dog is a rap group with something to say. Of all the remarkable things this album holds, the honest lyrics are the most prevalent. Drowning Dog is unabashedly anarchist. From the lyrics to the samples used, the music is focused around the ideas of ultimate human justice for everyone. DD wants a world where everyone is equal and poverty is no longer an issue, and offers anarchism as a way to get that. Many, if not most, songs are very sample heavy. Snippets from news interviews and other media outlets that support anarchism and anti-government practices are all over this album. The rapper herself (that's right, herself) is also very good. Her rhythm and rhymes are well constructed, and the beats are good and catchy. A great group.

For my first post on the blog i decided to upload my favourite album of 2007 (I bought this on release date and it did not leave tray 5 of my CD player for at least 6 months) . now, for those well versed in 'Underground' Hip-Hop this may well be old news but for the uninitiated... pay attention. El-P has garnered most attention as the head of (arguably) Hip-Hop's most popular Indie Record Label since the year 2000... Definitive Jux. As well as making some impressive business moves with Def Jux (pretty much locking down some of the underground scene's most influential acts) the man sure knows how to knock out a mean release. Enough bigging the guy up. Download this, listen to the first track (who knew Rap could be this epic?) and try justifing deleting it afterwards. This guy understands where Hip-Hop has been and is launching it into the future... all be it, a dystopian one.
